Carnmoney calorie killer walk

Belfast hills partnership

We're inviting people to a calorie killing, healthy walk this weekend!

The moderate hillwalking event taking place this Saturday (January 7), will help people begin the battle of the bulge.

The Partnership’s Andrea McKernon who is organising the walk said Carnmoney Hill is a great place to start a new outdoor walking lifestyle for 2012.

She added that hillwalking as part of a healthy eating regime, was perfect for weight loss.

“We are asking people to make a date with their healthy diet destiny and kick off 2012 on Carnmoney Hill with our invigorating New Year’s walk. This walk will be moderate on walkers but will show no mercy to calories."

Walking in the Belfast Hills is a simple and cheap form of physical activity and at this time of year getting outdoors also helps to banish those January blues.

Hill walking can also help manage your weight, reduce anxiety and depression, improve your muscle strength and keep your heart strong. Moderate daily walks of 40 minutes and more are best for losing weight.

“Our upcoming 2012 events programme will also provide plenty of opportunities to keep walking throughout the year, so this event could be the beginnings of a healthier hillwalking lifestyle for many people," said Andrea.

Due to the recent rainy conditions, Carnmoney Hill is muddy and slippery in places. Walking boots with gaiters are ideal or alternatively Wellington boots.

PLEASE NO TRAINERS. You will not be able to go on the walk if you turn up wearing running shoes or other unsuitable footwear.

  • Walkers are asked to wrap up warm, bring waterproofs, wear sturdy boots and bring a low calorie snack if they wish.
  • If you own a walking stick or walking poles bring them along to use for extra stability.
  • The walk meets at Knockenagh Avenue, Newtownabbey at 10am and finishes at midday.
  • The route will include some short steep parts but the pace will be leisurely to suit all levels of walker.
  • Due to the wet conditions we have waived the admission fee for this event. You may make a voluntary donation to the Partnership if you wish on the day.
  • This walk is not suitable for children under eight. All children must be supervised at all times by an adult.
  • Carnmoney Hill in Newtownabbey is managed by the Woodland Trust.
