Volunteering Jobs

Below is a list of volunteering job descriptions for specific projects the Partnership wishes to undertake.
No matter how little or much time you can give us, you would be helping us a great deal.

Volunteer Job Descriptions
• Interpretation Audit
Duties - Research into the compilation of leaflets and panels in and around the Belfast Hills. Gathering examples of electronic and/or innovative presentation of such information.
Based - mostly at home or on sites, occasional office time to report back
Requirements - able to visit sites, photograph panels, communication skills.
Time - Roughly three months depending on availability. More about interpretation
Biodiversity
• Japanese Larch surveys
Duties - Assist staff with woodland surveys of Japanese larch plantations in the Belfast Hills, checking for potential signs of Sudden Oak Death Phytophora ramorum.
Based - Mostly out on site.
Requirements - Mobile and methodical, training given
Time -Summer months. More about sudden oak death
• Marsh Fritillary –habitat/scabious
Duties - Assist staff with floral surveys, particularly of Devil’s-bit Scabious Succissa pratensis in uplands
Based - Out in field
Requirements - Mobile and methodical, training given

• Fire mapping
Duties - Assist staff with mapping of major fires in uplands
Based - Out in field
Requirements - Mobile and methodical, training given
Time - Spring and summer months, depending on fires. More about fires 1 - fires 2
• Visitor Surveys
Duties - Carry out visitor surveys on main public sites
Based - Sites such as Cave Hill, Divis - accompanied by other volunteer/staff. Some time in office compiling data.
Requirements - good personal/communication skills, able to fill out and analyse survey data.
Time - Summer months initially. See downloads page for previous visitor surveys
• Virtual Tours
Duties - To research, plan and gather information and material for virtual tours of sites in the hills.
Based - Home, office and on site
Requirements - Some level of relevant media experience and editing skills. This is beyond current skills within Belfast Hills Partnership, therefore the volunteer would be self-reliant and motivated.
Time - six months
• Fundraising/public relations events
Duties - Assist with a broad range of events such as walks, fairs and displays aimed at fundraising or raising awareness about the Belfast Hills and the Partnership
Based - On sites and varied venues, indoor and out
Requirements - Good personal and communication skills. Some knowledge and experience of fundraising preferable, with more planning work possible depending on levels of skills.
