The B17 bomber crash and Closing the Ring

Shirley Maclaine, Richard Attenborough, Mischa Barton, Christopher Plummer and Pete Postlethwaite star in one of the latest movies to make it to the big screen, shot at the very place on Belfast’s Cave Hill where over 60 years ago was the scene of a Second World War crash that claimed the lives of 10 American bomber pilots.

The film tells the story of how in 1943, A dying gunner, who was in a crash involving an American  B-17, gives a ring to a local to return to his girlfriend in the USA. Fifty years later tells of how a local Belfast man finds the ring and tracks down the girlfriend and the history of this ring.
Like all yarns to come out of Belfast the finding of this ring has led to a renaissance of interest in the crash and finally a fitting tribute to be laid under Napoleon’s Nose (the name given to the summit line of the Cave Hill as it resembles the features of Napoleon Bonaparte) in memory of the young American airmen who perished in flames at the northern edge of the Belfast Hills.
