This is a lovely film from the play Mojo Mickybo by Owen McCafferty. The movie director is Terry Loan, a local resident of the Belfast Hills. Starring two local children, the story tells of a dynamic duo of youngsters from different sides of the divide, who become friends and dedicated followers of outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid after watching the film starring Robert Redford and Paul Newman. Cave Hill can be seen in the background of this picture.
It’s a story of boyhood and friendship as Belfast erupts into conflict in the early 1970s. Adrian Dunbar, Ciaran Hinds (from Limestone Road under Cave Hill) and Julie Walters stars in this heart-warming story set in Belfast.
The year is 1970, and the streets of Belfast have erupted in violence. Despite the Troubles, the battle uppermost in the minds of young rascals Mickybo and JonJo is being fought in a more glamorous location altogether – on the silver screen, by their heroes Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
Enthralled by the film, the unlikely duo (from opposite sides of the sectarian divide) decide to form their own gang. Playing out their Wild West fantasies, however, triggers an escalating chain of events even their childlike imaginations could not have foretold.
